What is a cloud based LMS?

A cloud based LMS (also called a SaaS LMS) is a learning management system that the vendor hosts, secures and updates on the internet. You pay a subscription, sign in from a browser and start building courses. There is no software to install, no server to run and no upgrade project every year.

The alternative is a self-hosted LMS, where you install the software on your own server and your team is responsible for hosting, backups, security patches, video delivery and every upgrade. That route gives full control of the code, but it turns a teaching business into an IT project.

Open-source systems such as Moodle can be run either way. If you are moving off a self-hosted system, our LMS migration checklist covers what to move first.

What to look for in a cloud LMS

Where your learners actually study

Many cloud LMS products are built for desktop training portals. If your learners study on phones, check for real Android and iOS apps, offline lessons and push notifications, not just a responsive website. AcadifyLab provides learner apps, with apps published under your own brand on higher plans. See white label LMS.

Video that plays well on slow connections

Video is most of the storage and most of the support tickets. Check that hosting is included, that recordings of live classes can be published back to learners, and whether content protection such as DRM and watermarking is available. On AcadifyLab, DRM and watermarking are available on higher plans.

Live and self-paced in one place

A cloud LMS should not force one teaching format. AcadifyLab courses can mix recorded lessons, live classes on Zoom and Google Meet, notes and assessments, with attendance tied to each batch.

Payments without a revenue cut

Some cloud platforms charge a percentage of every course sale on top of the subscription. AcadifyLab charges a flat plan price and takes no share of what your learners pay.

Security and access control

Look for role-based permissions for admins, instructors and branch staff, plus single sign-on, two-factor authentication and audit logs if you sell to companies. On AcadifyLab, SSO, 2FA and audit logs are available on higher plans.

A way out

Ask how you export learners, results and content if you ever leave. A vendor that makes this easy is usually confident you will stay.

Who a cloud LMS suits

Getting started

Every plan starts with a free trial and no setup fee. Create one course, schedule a live class and open it on a phone. That tells you more about a cloud LMS than any feature list.

FAQ

Cloud LMS questions

What is the difference between a cloud LMS and a SaaS LMS?

In practice they mean the same thing: a learning management system hosted and maintained by the vendor, which you use through a subscription instead of installing it yourself.

Do I need any technical skills to use a cloud based LMS?

No. You configure branding, courses and users through the admin panel in a browser. Hosting, updates and security are handled by the platform.

Is my content secure on AcadifyLab?

Access is controlled by roles and permissions. On higher plans you can add single sign-on, two-factor authentication, audit logs, and DRM and watermarking for recorded videos.

Can learners use the LMS on their phones?

Yes. Learners can use the web academy or the mobile app. Higher plans publish Android and iOS apps under your own brand and allow offline lesson downloads.

Can AcadifyLab connect to my other systems?

Yes. API access and webhooks let the LMS exchange data with your CRM, website or internal tools, and the top plan includes custom integration work.

How is a cloud LMS priced?

Usually as a monthly or yearly subscription by plan. AcadifyLab uses flat plans with no revenue share and a free trial. See the pricing page for current plans.
