LMS vs LXP: what's the difference and which do you need?
A learning management system and a learning experience platform solve different problems. Here is how they differ, when each makes sense, and why most organisations only need one.
The short answer
An LMS (learning management system) delivers and tracks structured learning that the organisation assigns: courses, classes, tests and certificates. An LXP (learning experience platform) helps learners discover content for themselves, recommending articles, videos and courses from many sources based on their interests and role.
An LMS answers "did everyone complete the training we need, and did they pass?" An LXP answers "how do we help people find useful learning on their own?"
LMS vs LXP side by side
| LMS | LXP | |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Deliver, manage and track structured learning | Help learners discover and curate content |
| Who drives learning | Admins and instructors assign it | Learners explore and choose |
| Typical content | Courses, live classes, tests, assignments | Articles, videos, podcasts, external courses, user posts |
| Assessment | Quizzes, exams, graded work, certificates | Light or none |
| Reporting | Completion, scores, attendance, compliance records | Engagement, interests, skills signals |
| Best for | Onboarding, compliance, academies, selling courses, exam prep | Continuous learning in large organisations |
| Where it sits | The system of record for learning | Often a layer on top of an LMS |
When you need an LMS
- You must prove who completed training and passed, for compliance, clients or accreditation.
- You run structured programmes: onboarding, certification, courses with a start and an end.
- You teach live classes or run tests and mock exams.
- You sell courses to learners and need checkout, enrolment and access control.
- You run an academy, coaching institute or training business.
- AI features
This covers most organisations, and all academies and training businesses. See employee training software and e-learning platform.
When an LXP makes sense
- You are a large organisation with a big library of content from many providers.
- You want employees to learn continuously and choose their own paths.
- Skills development and internal mobility matter more than completion records.
- You already have an LMS for mandatory training.
Do you need both?
Usually not. Smaller and mid-sized organisations, academies and training companies get what they need from an LMS, especially one with learning paths, recommendations of the next course, discussion forums and analytics. Large enterprises sometimes add an LXP on top of their LMS so that mandatory training stays tracked while optional learning becomes more discoverable.
If you are unsure, start with the LMS. Structured delivery, assessment and records are the foundation; discovery can be added later.
What about AI?
The line between the two is blurring. Many LMSs now use AI for things once associated with LXPs, such as answering learner questions and spotting who is falling behind. On higher plans, AcadifyLab includes an AI learning assistant for learners and AI-assisted student analysis. See AI in LMS use cases.

LMS vs LXP questions
What is the main difference between an LMS and an LXP?
An LMS delivers and tracks structured learning that the organisation assigns. An LXP helps learners discover and curate content for themselves.
Can an LXP replace an LMS?
Rarely. LXPs are not designed for assessment, certification and compliance records, so organisations that need those keep an LMS as the system of record.
Which is better for a training company or academy?
An LMS. Training businesses need enrolment, structured courses, live classes, tests, certificates and often payments, which are core LMS functions.
What does LXP stand for?
LXP stands for learning experience platform.
